Stay Safe Out There! Illinois Fatal Crash Data, Broken Down.
Good news: So far, Illinois has had far fewer fatal car crashes in 2019 than in 2018. This infographic by Sam C. Mitchell & Associates breaks down the factors in fatal accidents so you can see what makes a difference. In 2018, the largest percentage of fatal crashes involved motorcycles, with pedestrian accidents just one point behind. High-speed crashes on state highways were almost as frequent as accidents in our cities and towns. It’s a good bet these trends have continued in 2019.
What Else Affects Fatal Crash Rates?
As drivers, we face hundreds of different decisions and circumstances each day. Even when we’re doing our best to follow the rules, mistakes happen. Sometimes when things go wrong it’s completely on another driver, and you’re just caught up in the consequences.
Thankfully, most of the car crashes that happen across our state are not fatal. As drivers, though, we should always be prepared for the worst. Here are some other factors that play a role in the worst crashes. Some of them may surprise you.
- Speed is a factor in 36% of fatal crashes.
- 86% occur on dry roadways.
- Almost half (49%) happen when it’s light out.
- By far the largest number of fatal crashes involve fixed objects, not other vehicles.
